Dear Ragasudha,
Truely, yet another fabulous pick of an instrument that found probably it's best usage at the hands of our Master. Though it is literally a Himalayan task to list out the songs in which Accordion is featured, some of the Master pieces that immediately occured as a falsh in my mind are, "Kannirandum Minna Minna", "Athan Ennathan", "Tamizhukkum Amudhendru Per" & "Jillendru Kaatru Vandhadho"!!! Does any one in this world have the capacity & the guts to put this instrument to a usage like these??? Well, the answer is an emphatic NNNNNNNOOOOOO....
Ragasudha & forum members, just thought this would be the most appropriate moment to have a small tribute paid to some of the finest exponents of this instrument in MSV's orchestra. Late Shri. Mangalamurthy & Late Shri. Ben Surender are the duo who virtually ruled the accordion arena from the 60's to 80's with their impeccable playing skills. Needless to say that they were the unsung heroes behind the screen...
What a scintillating handling of this instrument? The utter ease & total innovation with which our Creator has used some of these Western instruments to completely suit the Indian film music arena stands as a perennial tetmony to his unchallenged creativity and the confidence that our Master possesses to roll out melodies of our life time, time after time!!!
DIVINITY & MELODY - THY NAME SHRI. SHRI. MSV!!!
Dr. Anand Chelappa ( a doctor by profession who moved to the USA in the 70's, Mr. Rajkumar (who acted as a young boy in the film Ramu) & Mr. Patrick Rozario are some of the fine accordion players who have played for Shri. MSV and have also played in our anniversary celebrations.
I must also mention here about Late Pandit Visweshwaran who not only played Santoor for Shri. MSV but is the biggest MSV rasika I have across in my life. A Chartered accountant who relinquished his profession just for Shri. MSV's music, he was also considered to be the best flamenco guitar player ever produced by our country. I wish to mention here the nostalgic days during which I & Vishwesh used to spend hours listening to MSV's music in his cute looking recording theatre in his residence. For me it was a double treat...One listening to our Master's compositions & two, looking at the awestruck reactions of Vishwesh listening to our Legend's music.... Moments I will cherish for the rest of my life...
Tail end tit bit - some of the world's best accordions are made in a small village in Italy!!!
CHEERS

Dear Bhaskar,
Undoubtedly.....Yet another huge usage of this instrument. A waltz that can melt even the hardest of rocks. A complete western based composition literally transformed to suit the Indian film music I wrote about in my earliest post. Another immortal melody indeed.,...
Cheers

DEAR RAGASUDHA,
MAHA Santosham for having taken Accordian. CHUM CHUM, CHUM CHUM LALALA followed by the excellent usage of Accordain. Song fetched National award for PS. How can one forgot the usage of Accordian in the prelude of Thanga pathakithen mella. Accordian was played in alarming speed. It was like fast and furious Roberts Bowling at Chepauk.
The song Alayam enapathu from Thamarai Nenjam had excellent usage in the prelude. Accordian usage in kuyilaga from Selva magal was a great hit.
Shri Msv has used wide range of instruments. He accorded high priority for Accordian. Iam quite sure that the enlightened forum members will come out with more info. on the usage of Accordian by
SHRI MSV.
The insighfull article on Bongo highlighted one important point. Music directors like SD Burman and SJ had made good use of Bongo. But the tonal quality of Bongo in MSv songs was superior. Iam certain that analysis on Accordain usage will also state that the usage of Accordian in MM songs was supeiror.

Dear Ragasudha,
I do not know how to thank you for, one, having started such a wonderful thread and two, now bringing out some of the accordian gems of MSV songs and re -recordings !
After seeing the instrument image you have posted, one incidence that is immediately flashing in my mind is Dr. Anand Chellapa's rendering both in our Anniversary and in the get together we had with him at Sampat's place.
"Athaan ennathaan " and "our naal iravil kann urakkam pidikkavillai" played by him brought out so well the nuances of the song and such a creation is possible only by our MSV !
Thanks once again, Ragasudha !

In the song 'Poga poga' in Server Sundaram, is it accordion that highlights the song as each stanza winds up? And, does it also add to the progression of the violin orchestra as the playing climbs to a climax? In the song 'Oru tharam', this instrument also adds to the teasing mood brought in by the singers as well as other instruments.
Such a powerful instrument, very very difficult to play with both the hands involved in playing simultaneously....The clarity and sharpness of the notes are something out of this world. A pity people have forgotten such a sophiticated melodious instrument...As all of us know, in the hands of our master, it has worked wonders!

Dear Mr Raghavendran,
One amazing piece of Accordion that I can immediately recall is from the movie காத்திருந்த கண்கள். In that movie, Gemini used to visit Savithri's (the rich one) house disguising himself in an elderly man's get-up. When Savithri finds out the truth, she will ask Gemini to sit in a chair saying she will draw his portrait and draws the actual young Gemini's picture. That is the scene where MSV has used the Accordion in an outstanding manner and this music bit is a prelude to the song காற்று வந்தால் தலை சாயும் நாணல். Please try and present us this BGM piece for us to enjoy.

Hi Ragasudha & forum members,
I watched on TV this morning of probably one of the greatest usages of Accordion. The songs are Sorgam Pakkathil & Kanden Kalyana Pen Pondra Megam......What a way to use this instrument.....Innovation at it's best....
What else can roll out of this Musical Vaamana Avatharam of Shri. Mahavishnu - Shri. MSV!!!
I urge all of you to listen to the interludes of both these songs and judge for yourself as to how this western instrument has been used to completely suit the Indian listeners......
MELODY STARTS & ENDS WITH MSV.....
CHEERS
MSV IS MUSIC!!!

'Kanden kalyana pen pondra' from SPB/PS with the solid backup of MM's accordion is intoxicatiing. I am reminded of SPB's entry into the Tamil film music: What a start to his career from the hands of MM...it all started with an inviting piece on accordion in his first song 'Iyarkkai ennum..!' Very majestic!
