Dear Friends,
My previous posting on Kannadasan and his prowess as a lyricist is reiterated here from this 'unusual' movie situation of a chorus in Hair dressers shop, where the workers and their chief render this song.
Amazing indeed is the way Kannadasan introduces these professionals in their own words; even more appealing is the precise observations of kavignar in terms of what happens in that ambience ;
'sondhamumillE BandhamumillE sonna idaththil amarndhukoLgirAr'
Have we ever seen a customer who does not 'obey' the worker's suggestion to sit in a place?
'nAngaL mannarumillE mandhiri illE vaNakkom pottu thalaiyai saikkirAr'
Is it not true that every customer exchanges a polite wish before taking the seat suggested? Also, none carries ego in discharging this routine [though the same person may not volunteer to have a morning's wish to anyone, elsewhere].
'vaLarndhu vittal manidharellAm kurangugaL aavAr' nAgaL
mazhiththu vittal marupadium manidhargaL aavAr' ; the first line in this couplet carries pun; 'valarndhu vittAl' is a reference to the person's hair and his social status by position where upon the man turns a monkey in looks and some ego-centered behaviour. The second line duly recognizes the value of hairdressing and the dignity of labour in the proclamation= 'nAngaL mazhiththu vittAl marupadiyum manidhrgaLaavAr'.
Look at this
'irukkum pOdhu thailam pOttu azhagu pArkkirAr, irangi vittAl thirumbippArkka veruppu koLgirAr, avarE veruppu koLgirAr'
'uLLaidaththil uLLavaraikkum unnai madhikkum indha ulagam
irangi vittAl yEri midhikkumE'.
In these, the first 2 lines refer to how a man treats his own product in place and off place. Using this trend, KD draws attention to worldly behaviour of the society to persons in position and to the same persons when they cease to have a position.
Friends, is it not the alacrity of KD to the fore in this song?
