Dear Friends,
The song 'Engey neeyo naanum angey' by P Susheela in Nenjirukkumvarai has intrigued me on the unusual nature of the percussion arrangement by our MM. The song appears, probably, in two versions in the film. The most popular one is the one that I am referring to.
This type of tabla accompaniment in this version is generally adopted in two or three situations, as I understand: first, mostly devotional bhajans, and next, when the tempo of a devotional song or, for that matter, any such song entering into a fast or climax phase, such beats are usually adopted. But, here Tabla Prasad (or whoever thoughtfully played this) appears to have uses this beat throughout the song, right from the start! But, the effect is beautiful as the percussion carries the song, singer and the mood alongwith it! I do not think anyone else’s music features such an innovative percussion for such a film song!
Thanks,
Sai Saravanan |

Dear Sir,
Probably the second link is the one that I am referring to. This version has the tabla following PS and in the other is a combination of congo and bongo, etc.
