Dear Friends,

CLAP AS A UNIQUE EMBELLISHMENT

As the very title of the thread goes, MSV always stands pleasantly different and tellingly unique by the way he exploits innumerable strategies which elevate a song to a new high –to an otherwise ‘hard to achieve’ brilliance.
This time let us recall some numbers where hand claps have been brilliantly added to a piece. Even more intriguing is the chosen locales where the claps are placed as a decided value for listening pleasure. As such, they may appear anywhere in a song from its opening or mid-course or in a later charanam and so on. As ever, sky is the limit for this legendary composer. The range and application are bewildering; so, I merely recall the list with a request that friends can add any item that would strengthen the idea.

Aada varalAm and thangachi chinnapoNNu karuppupaNam

Sandhanam kungumam konda thAmaraippoo – Ragasiya police -115

Unnai onru kEtpEn Pudhiya paravai

pAduvOr pAdinAl kaNNan en kAdhalan

boomiyil iruppadhum Shanthi nilayam

vAroi en thOzhi vArAyO pAsa malar

kungumapottu kulungudhadi Idhu sathiyam

manjal mugam niram mAri karNan

What is amazing about these clap-settings is the perfect unison with which artistes clap their hands to create a respectable delight and ecstasy that signify the intended mood.

Warm regards K. Raman Madurai
