Dear Friends,

Embellishment “HOI – HOI HOI HOI and HOYYA” –as MSV’s Patents

One of the earliest innovations by MSV to cine songs has been his use of romantic ‘HOI’ in different forms. He has literally pumped new blood and life to duets by his articulation of Hoi and its variants. Interestingly no other MD has attempted it, though it has ensured success with every occasion that MSV had used it on. Even if some have tried ‘HOI’, probably they felt the real problems in articulating the same with the same consummate ease that appears to oblige MSV for the asking. Needless to reiterate that MSV knows how, when and where “HOI” would be a perfect foil to the mood of a song.
With conviction, I am able to see that MSV has not abused or over-used it ; he has rather made use of it to the right scale and limit that it satiates listeners’ appetite for the romantic element in a duet of the kind. Indeed the list is exhaustive and we can limit our observation to some well known numbers.

Aadaludan pAdalai kEttu -- Kudiyirundha koil

pEsuvadhu kiLiyA -- paNathOttam

ninaithEn vandhAi -- kAval kAran

rOjAmalarE rAja kumari --- veerathirumagan

thottAl poo malarum --- padagotti

nAn mAnthoppil --- enga veettu piLLai

nilavennum aadai koNdALO --- parakkum pAvai

sittukkuruvi mutham koduthu -- pudhiya paravai

thEnadi mAnadi --- nenjam marappadhillai

idhuvarai neengaL pArtha pArvai --- [movie?]

malligai mAnvizhi --- [movie?]

The style of using ‘hoi’ is specific to each song and hearing them reveals MSV’s fertile imagination in adding value to the mood – which is so very essential for cine songs.

More would follow.

Warm regards
