Dear Friends,

HUMMING – ANOTHER ECSTASY IN MSV SONGS

In our endeavour to locate the varied strategies that MSV avails of to strengthen the profile of his compositions, the items keep emerging – not because I desire expanding the panorama but more as ‘revelation’ as one searches for some typical feature or the other. I mean, at the time of opening the thread, I expected the topic would fold up after 3 0r 4 elements. Despite the seemingly expansive scope of the canvas spreading far and wide, the sense of incompleteness also keeps advancing as a shadow would with the Sun peeping from the other horizon. No regrets or any urgency to hurriedly close the thread so that the topic comes to an end.
After all, our mission behind writing is the sheer joy of realizing the composer’s bewildering array of items in his repertoire; more inevitably, we do encounter the thought “why has TFM touched a bizarre hollow” instead of a professional amplification /modification on the large scale imagination that MSV, his contemporaries and certain predecessors who had so meticulously crafted to proudly proclaim of “COMPOSITION” in the true sense of the term?

Perhaps after reaching the pinnacle, a climb down is inevitable if not imminent.

The item for our present consideration is “HUMMIMG” an element of paradise. As with every other element so far considered, humming in MSV songs has a place of pride. Normally in cine songs, humming signifies closure. Such a tradition is also found in MSV songs. But, his approach to the process has its own prescriptions. Yes, singers may hum together or just one of them would do it. It may just happen at Pallavi or later or anywhere. There are cases where, humming is used as a response in non-verbal or non-lyrical form; yet it infuses a high degree of delight by the richness in octave which competes for recognition by its magnitude 0r enthusiasm or elegance or all bundled in one. A survey of the songs can speak more by the way the listener recalls the majesty in composition.

‘nAn pEsa ninaippadhellAm’ -- pAlum pazhamum

‘veeNai pEsum’ * -- vAzhvu en pakkam

‘pottu vaitha mugamO’ * -- Sumathi en sundari

‘pAliruukum pazham irukkum’ -- pAva mannippu**

‘kodukka kodukka inbam pirakkumE’ -- nAn aaNai ittAl**

‘nAn nanri solvEn’ -- kuzhandhaiyum dheivamum**

Songs marked * have specific services of singers –BS Sasirekha and B Vasantha and the embellishment in these songs by their rendition suggests how MSV chooses to make the best of an occasion.

Movies marked ** have stood the benefit of MSV’s humming and in each case the impact from his humming is too well known to be discussed.

More would follow.

Warm regards K.Raman Madurai
