ALOYSIUS VINCENT -VII
Vincent- Sundaram worked as a pair for a long time at least until the two were a part of Chitralaya group. Obviously, their intimacy in work proved an asset to Sridhar, who chose to have the best on the job for the different aspects of film –making. In fact, the duo worked in most Sridhar movies irrespective of language. Speaking of their ‘understanding’, several instances can be cited. For want of space, let us consider just a few cases.
Nenjil ore aalayam.
Though a budget movie, N O A, was rich in simplicity and grand in presentation. In the year of its making [1962], the storyline was new and much was achieved through the songs. Picturization of songs had to be of top notch to drive the story which was an emotional drama.

The two songs- ‘enna ninathu ennai azhaithAyo’ and ‘sonnadhu nee thAnA sol, sol’ proved extremely vital in setting the ground for the climax.

‘Sonnadhu nee thAnA’ had to be shot in a 10 x 8 room where all elements of an ‘in-patient room’ were in place and the key artiste was seated [playing Sitar] on the floor, while the patient was in his bed, melancholically sitting. Lighting had to be steady and space would not allow frequent shift in camera placements.

A Vincent and Sundaram planned positioning 4 different cameras to shoot from different points in the limited space available. [As per Sundaram’s narration, all assistants lined up for work and the entire song was simultaneously recorded in all cameras, so as to avoid breaking in between. Also, the artistes had an easier ambience for sustaining facial expressions [as the shot was continuous]. One of the cameras was registering the song from under the cot – a famous item remembered by all. Subsequently, contents from the 4 cameras were suitably edited [NM Shankar] to show as if camera was changing view points for the song. This methodology simply saved on time as the whole movie was shot in a single set in a span of 21 days; the movie made a huge impact as a silver jubilee hit despite ‘low budget , no-star’ status. Including Nagesh, all on the cast were least known artistes, raised to stardom through sound techniques in movie making.
There are some more interesting aspects of Vincent’s work in B&W and colour emulsions as well.
