The mesmerising Magician with golden fingers , had an extraordinary journey from the 50s till end 70s – 3 decades….

Music followers will appreciate that the trend changes every 5 years … This man had been producing unimaginable wonders all through the 50s , 60s and 70s like a Monarch Alexander…

3 decades means 9 different musical trends - from absolutely carnatic >>> semi carnatic >>> light music >>> Western light music >> he could deliver astounding melodies with different orchestration in tune with the times…

He ultimately stepped into the 1980s with a renewed vigour , after the splendid success of Ninaithale Inikkum and other decent hits…

The timeless wonder also has time factor no ? Though he still had that DIVINE MELODY on his compositions, the orchestration had to step into the next generation…

He also faced challenges from the emerging musician of the mid 70s… that great Composer too established his own forte and went on to dominate another decade till the arrival of another Composer in the early 90s ….

The dipping share in movies , the shift towards the other musician , created a dent on this man… This is not unique to him only…. Greats in all fields have undergone this and our man was no exception no ?

Till the early 70s, the 2 mega stars – Nadigar Thilagam and Makkal Thilagam were a dominant force and this Man was their main OBVIOUS choice ... the exit of Makkal Thilagam consequent to his becoming the CM had its impact on our Creator because he used to extract special tunes from this Man..

The ageing of Nadigar Thilagam from the mid 70s further had its say on our Man’s products in the sense, the song situations all mattered to a larger extent…

The mid 70s also witnessed the arrival phase of the next generation stars – Kamal and Rajini…

While the second part of the 70s saw this Champion Composer give super hits to both, the opportunities were moving away slowly.

The Star value of Rajini and Kamal was so dominant that those who were associated with them consequently became more famous …..

1980-81- Billa ,Polladhavan, Ranuva veeran, Thillu mullu , Thee songs were super hits and few are being reproduced also now

For Kamal – Varumayin niram Sigappu was a landmark movie – This Composer had once again delivered beautiful melodies

Somehow, the old magic was somewhat missing ?? Music experts started questioning this Man ..whether he can continue his ride during the 80s ??

So, the poor worshippers like me were eagerly waiting for another series of magic from this divine Composer…

Under AVM’s banner, Rajini’s Murattu Kaalai was a mega hit and songs were also hugely popular ( may not be now is another matter ).. 1980

Finally Pokkiri Raja came in 1982 – another AVM movie and this time it was offered to our Man..

The movie has few songs but I will cherish forever VIDIYA VIDYA SOLLI THARUVEN ….

The scintillating Violin start being welcomed by Sitar and Flute which takes you to the Pallavi was a refreshing thing to me !

And there is an anupallavi too …here you can hear the sweet tone of Sitar …

The interludes are all vintage Santoor, Flute, Guitar chords ….the old magic is back !!!

The 2nd interlude again had that what we were hearing for 3 decades…..the honey soaked melody ….

Tune ? that shake for ANDHIYIL panjanai …. Are we not hearing this special touch all these years !

The structure for pallavi itself is typical of this Man ….for each phrase of SPB, PS interjecting with her golden voice …

The song was a welcome relief to hardened fans like yours faithfully….

Yesterday I heard the song again….the unbelievable melody still intact !!

33 years have passed by and the song is still in our hearts, refreshingly fresh !

Are we able to remember the songs of the other Composers of 80s , 90s , 2000s ??

Why and how is it that this song is still so beautiful and has life ?!

Indeed, our Man is the ULTIMATE COMPOSER ...

We miss You MSV ji ...

Dear Balaji,

I enjoyed your write up on 'vidiya vidiya,' one of my favorite songs.

This song has some resemblance to 'thangach chalangai katti' from Oedum Nadhi.

Dear Sirs,
Yes, this song was a refreshing song of the season. If I remember correctly, this got released in stereo, with a reasonably good recording. Yet another hallmark of this composition was the brilliant usage of Prasad's tabla. MM has beautifully adopted tabla in hindustani style, and even allowing Prasad to escape with his brilliant imagination. SPB mesmerizes us throughout the song,..."idhu pol naanum...", "..illaya raani.."... What a composition!
Excellent choice sir!
Thanks,
Sai Saravanan
