POLICE KARAN MAGAL –VII
Songs – contd…
6 ‘kaNNilE neer edharku.. SG SJ is rendered as voice embellishment for the emotion- surcharged brother and sister passing through the phase of dejection with no immediate prospect of what to do with the lover-boy having disowned any knowledge of the girl. The situation is horribly pathetic to say the least. In negotiating this ‘nasty corner’ in the movie, KD and MSV have rescued the story and the director by their articulate prowess of making a song. KD has dealt a dialogue-like treatment between the characters in haunting agony. Questions are raised by the brother and the answer from the sister display bitterly dejected mind of hers.

Brother : ‘kannile neer edharku?’ Sister: ‘kAlamellam azhuvadharku’
Bro: ‘nenjilE ninaivedharku?’ sis: ‘vanjagarai marappadharku’
Bro: ‘kAlilE nadai edharku?’ sis: ‘kadhalithu pirivadharku’
Bro: ‘aasai konda vazhvedharku?’ sis: ‘andrAdam sAvadharku’
Bro: ‘vandukku siragedharku?’ sis: ‘unda pinbu parappadharku’
All these spots through the song portray the agony of a hapless girl mercilessly abandoned by a play boy and all her answers reflect utmost dejection as the lone product of trusting the untrustworthy. MSV’s choice of SG for male voice must have been impelled by the need for full-throated agony punctuated by precise pronunciation soaked in emotion. His orchestration has enriched the melancholy of which better brains may bring out finer nuances thereof.
7 ‘porandhAlum AmbiLayA’ –JPC LRE
Though ‘treated’ as a comic piece, the song is an ‘one-line’ advice for gullible girls and boys [promiscuous?] who run into avoidable problems for want of sane guidance at moments of hormonal surge and experimental urge. To me, this song simply summarizes the plight of UNSUSPECTING girls victimized by proficient cheats in our society.
I trust to have done justice to my attempt; if not pardon me.

Your explanations on each of the songs of PKM are fabulous !
All these songs got carved in my mind during my school days and became emotionally attached to them right from that time !!
Thanks for the recall.
