DIRECTOR CV SRIDAR - A PIONEER IN HIS OWN RIGHT

DEAR FRIENDS,

I dedicate this 400th posting of mine to the all time great

Director of TF industry -Mr.C.V SRIDAR , whose movies were conceptually

ahead of times in one or the other [sometimes all] domains of

movie-making.

Not without reason people adore him to-date, though he is not making

movies any longer.

At a very young age he came to limelight as a playwright and . screen play writer and slightly later as a TOP RANKING Director of Tamil films. The scale of his success was indeed high, that many of his TFs were remade in Hindi and Telugu.

While looking at the grandeur of SRIDAR, it is imperative to draw attention to the times when he made a mark as a movie Director/ maker. The then TF industry had the houses of Gemini, AVM, Vijaya vauhini combines, Jupiter, Modern Theatres, APN , Pantulu, Bhim singh, T.Prakash rao, Pulliah and P.Bhanumathi's Ramakrishna Pictures and so on. Why I recall these movie-makers is, just to suggest that there was no dearth of able Directors . Rather it was a time when CVS emerged quite successful conspicuous by "down to earth" home situations and Conversations, pulling the trend out of its earlier artificial grammatic , lengthy, melodrama.

At the same time, he was very alert to have technical excellence as a vital component of movie-making. He was a clear pioneer who made us recognize Cinema as a visual medium. He changed the Drama-like approaches of Cinema and brought forth aesthetic presentation through his movies. Therefore I prefer to accord him the status of "Pioneer" at least among those of late 1950s. To substantiate my line of thought , I need to provide evidence , lest I should be mistaken as indulging in blind eulogy. I highlight such instances that would lend credence to my contention of rating him a pioneer. Look at these.

1. Use of common domestic dialects in dialogue, made movie-watching a comfortable exercise , with no effort to understand what was said.
2 CVS made it a stamp of his by choosing to have a pattern of treatment as a skill of story-telling. Kalyaana parisu, Nenjil ore aalayam, Avalukkenru oru manam , Nenjirukkum varai , Sumaithaangi are all based on Sacrifice as the message. But each film looks different because of a skillful treatment of screen play and visual presentation. Let me list some his "PIONEERING' contributions to TF Industry.

a] He made Mega hit movies that never relied on Star value.
b] Several artistes came into TF industry after being selected by CVS.
c] As early as 1961 he shot Thane Nivalu at that distant Kashmir . [Claims
of TF moving to outdoor only after 1980s is just untenable]
d] CVS was THE FIRST TF Director to have completed an entire movie in
21 DAYS, ON A SINGLE SET --- N O A .
e] He made Sivaji Ganesan KR Vijaya and others act in Nenjirukkum
varai, without make-up.
f] He made bold and effective attempts in Kaadhalikka Neramillai, Vennira
aadai, and Alaigal by inducting mostly new comers.
g] Vennira aadai was entirely with new comers [1965], while KN had
Kanchana and Ravichandran as new artistes [1964] Was it not an
adventure of sorts with no star value nearly 45 years ago?
h] His [CVS's] real adventure was in KN MADE IN COLOUR and he got it
processed by GEMINI COLOR LABS , Chennai as their very first effort
in colour film processing. Many movies of the same period were sent
to Bombay for processing. Certainly it was a bold venture by CVS.
i] CVS was the first Producer-Director to have shot in Tamil and Hindi
movies in Paris, Switzerland and parts of Europe his SIVANDHA MANN
and Dharthi , using the same technical crew except MDs.
j] Market revivals for Devika, Nagesh , Muthuraman[N OA] Rajasree and
T S Baliah[K N] after their roles in those movies.
j] CVS was the first Producer TO HAVE GIVEN PROMINENCE TO
TECHNICIANS ON MOVIE POSTERS and BANNERS.
K] He was one of the few TF Directors to have made a name in Hindi
films.
l] To my knowledge he was the first TF Director to have had a fan
following for his sheer artistic presentation of movies without using
substandard or "double-meaning" utterances.
m] Without doubt his penchant for comedy and music were supreme if
movies, KN . Ooty varai uravu, Kalaikoil, NOA are just considered.
n] Whatever the storyline his use of Brilliant cinematographic
presentation have been supreme right from Kalyana Parisu [1960]
O] Was the first to form a movie-makers council to disciplining the
schedule of releasing films and to bring in some semblance of
regulation [1971-72]

One can keep on observing his lavish skills, if we remember that his period of activity relied on skills and little on technology. I trust our friends appreciate the calibre of Mr. CVS and make the younger generation recognize the values of hard labour without relying of cheap attractions for the audience. I dedicate this posting to Mr. C V Sridar- real pioneer.

Warm regards Prof.K.Raman Madurai.
