Do you want to take us for granted. We can not do so. We are not able to do so. It's difficult to chose favourites because choice itself is cruel. If there is a rule we have to follow. Like that when we are asked to we have to.
After very elaborate mental strain, I am trying to give favourite 10:
1. Engay Unnai thottaal kooda (for creating novel concept in humming) (from Chitthira Chevvaanam)
2. Pattatthu Raani Paarkkum Paarvai (for exposing the India's greatest singer LR Easwari)
3. Ninaitthaen Vandhaai Nooru vayadu (Unique raga, I think Kalingada)
4. Ninaitthadai Nadatthiyae (for foot tapping beats - drums, bangoes, and what not)
5. Engey Nimmadhi (the best in MSV's career)
6. Ennai Yaarendru Enni Enni (for the Shenoy)
7. Malligai En Mannan Mayangum (Dheerkka Sumangali)
8. Thaedi thaedi kaatthirundaen (Best of P Suseela)
9. Mutthamo Mogamo (Parakkum Paavai - for the best in chorus)
10. Nee Illaadha Idamaeyillai Needhaanae Ulagin Ellai (Muhammad-bin-Tughlaq) (Even the fanatic anti-muslim will fall prey to this song and voice, and prey Allah for a second).
I prey Lord to make this two digit favourite to six digit favourites.

Saradha Madam,

Include this too in the Kannadaasan - MSV duo.

Vaan Nila Nila Alla (PattanaPravesam)

"Inbam 'Kattil'a
Aval Dega 'Katti'la"

Again, the differentiation is exactly shown by our EMPEROR!!!

Top 10 is not the right count, as the EMPEROR's milestones cannot be measured with such a small number. Anyway, my choices would be

1) Therodum Enga Seerana Maduraiyile - BagaPirivinai (for the excellent use of chorus and folk instruments, and bringing the "Oyilaattam" to our vivid imagination)

2) Annaachi Vetti Kattum Aambalaya Neenga - Palani (a group song involving all top singers (TMS, Seergaazhi, SC Krishnan, ALR, LRE) and depicting a "Jallikattu" festival in a unique manner)

3) Poo mazhai thoovi Vasanthangal vaazhtha - Ninaithathai Mudipavan (No other song would match the praises given to the newly married couples like this. Clarinet used at its extreme)

4) Silai ezhunthu paadumo - Raaman ethanai Raamanadi (PS at her best)

5) Payanam , Pathu maadha chithiram onru jananam - Payanam (sung by the one and only EMPEROR, in the background of a moving train)

6) Chandira pirai Paarthen - Kizhakkum Merkkum Sandikinrana (VJ's best)

7) Ullam rendum onrai onru - Sivagamiyin Selvan (Even the nation-wide hit "Meri Sapnon ki Raani" could not match the "thullal" expressed my TMS and the EMPEROR)

Cool Ulagam Sutrum Vaaliban (Ethai Solla, Ethai Vida) - I pick "Aval oru Navarasa Naadagam"

9) Naan oru Kaathal Sanyaasi - Thava Puthalvan (Only possible for an EMPEROR to grasp a "peppy" tune from a Bhajan)

10) Yaadhum Oore Yaavarum Kelir - Ninaithaale Inikkum

I would love to list more, if the limit increases...

"TOP 500 MSV FAVOURITES"

என்று மாற்றும் வரை என்னால் பட்டியல் போட இயலாது, ஏனென்றால் அது முடியாத காரியம். எதைச்சொல்வது... எதை விடுவது...!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

on a lighter note, I remember one other song that was written to somewhat the same kind of situation (Hero and Heroine do not trust each other well yet they are in love?.).

Eeramana rojave, ennai paathu moodadhe ...
.......
Ennai pathu oru megam.........

so far so good...

then all of a sudden from nowhere,

"thanneeril moozhgadu kaatrulla pandu, ennoda nee vodiva sendu.."

To this day, I never fully understood who is pandu(apparently heart ?), kaatru (love ?), thanner (who is it ?). who does not know this 'thathuvam' anyway.

I posted it for fun, not to demean anyone. I will delete this post if anyone is offended.

My point is, in Nizhal Nizamagiradu song, we can see how MSV's music highlighted right tone for important words in Kannadasan's lyrics. It is god's gift to MSV to do this.

Samething with my other favorite "kallellam manikka kallaguma" song, watch for the sitar/veena bit right after "vundu endru sollvadu undan kannallava, vanna kannallava". I have not seen the picturization, but I
am 100% sure that director focuses actress eyes in the camera. What an imagination from MSV for very small detail. This bit not played for the second time in the same song.

saradha madam,

the differences in the words you have pointed, can clearly identify by the very clear prononciation of VANI JAYARAM.

in those days they have utilised such kind of clear-cut voices for the songs.

dear all

Tamil was really decorated , by poets , and the platform , was given to them , by excellent tunes + situations , and the ability of MDs , to tune ANY THING ,not only that we had singers, who have understood the language irrespective of the fact whether its the mother tongue/or not .

IMAGINE HOW MANY OF THE NEW SINGERS CAN EXPRESS THIS DIFF .

HENCE WE WILL APPLAUD THE WHOLE TEAM .

OUR GREAT'S expertise , (to even to tune for Maligai list) made kaviarasu / valee , to play with the words .with full enjoyment .

and thats preciously the reason , why the old songs popular even now after 4 decades

also see my other thread " swing /situation songs - which i hope will show the other aspect "THE GREAT "

Hi Mahesh,

It's really great to see many more logging onto our site in the recent past. Mahesh, I am really amazed by your song selection as most of the ones that you have listed are my most favourites too. One thing about our EMPERROR is that when it comes to choosing, then it's the most toughest task one could do. Anyway, it was very nice of you to have chosen some splendid beauties of MSV. Welcome once again and please go ahead and share all your MSV experiences with the rest of us.

MSV in Malayalam and Telugu
Maro Charitra – one of the musical classic of MSV for KB.
Kamal told in an interview long back in Kumudham. Ek Duje Ke Liye edukum bothu Hindi songs eppadi varumonu romba bayanthangalam... Really Telugu songs will be of more class. He has used SPB, PS, VJ, SJ, LRE, Ramola and Kamal. All songs were GEMS. Ennum oru three songs serthirundha Navaratnam-nu sollirukalam… Smile

Chilakamma Cheppinthi – Telugu version of Nizhal Nijamagirathu.
In Teludu, Rajini played the role of Kamal. He used same tune of Ilakanam marudho. But for Kamban Emandhan he scored a different tune. Ketu romba years aachu. But it will be good.

Anthuleni Kadha – Telugu version of Aval Oru Thodarkathai. All are gems.

Pani theeratha Veedu (Prem Nazir. Directed by K.S.Sedhumadhavan)
Suprabatham – Jeyachandran got National Award for this song.

Pani theeratha Veedu - padam per sonnale songs dhan first ninaivuku varum. This was told in a songs program in Kairali TV, where there was a special episode on MSV songs.

Ormagal Marikumo – a beautiful number by VJ and a lovely Yesudoss number with Sujatha’s humming.
Jeevikan Marannu Poya Stree – Veena Poovae – two versions. Yesudoss voice with double track recording and another version by SJ. Both will be very nice.
Chandrakantam – another musical classic by MSV in Malayalam.

Some special melodies of MSV
Oru naal iravu pagal pol nilavu – an extraordinarily scored beautiful song. No words for me to say about this song.
Azhakadal neenthi vandhen – PS number from Anbulla Athan. I have this song in audio cassette. Beautiful BGM. (Can anyone help me in getting this song in CD.)
Kannana poomagane kannurangu suriyane – with only Ghatam as BGM. That’s our amazing mellisai mannar…
Muthu Kulikka Vaareegala – Recently SPB told in a program that R.D.Burman always used to talk with him about this song. He also used this tune in one of his songs.
Aadaludan paadalai kettu
Thulluvadho Ilamai
Minminiyai Kanmaniyai
Andhappakkam vaazhndhavan Romeo (Saibaba), Nal vazhvu naam vaazha (PS) - Veetuku Veedu
Varavu Ettana Selavu Pathana, Ninaithal siripu varum (MSV used PS differently in this song) – Bama Vijayam
Vasanthakala nadhigalile – VJ and Jeyachandran for Moondru Mudichu. MSV is the first singer to sing playback for Rajinikanth.
Rajini-ku konjam special-a irukanumnu neraya try panni sariya varalennu avare paadinaram.
Iyarkai Ennum (Santhi Nilayam), Yaarum illai inge (Panthukaga), Kadhal vilayada, Odam kadalodu (Kanmani Raja) – Beautiful duets of SPB and PS combination
Sontham eppodhum (two beautiful versions) – I used to here this song with my eyes closed. In one of my audio cassette, I have 8 songs in SIDE A. Athenna periya vishayamnu kekareengala. All the 8 songs were Sontham eppothum – dhan…
Mouname paarvayal oru paatu
Thannanthanimayile - PS from Engal Vathiyar (I think so)
Naana paaduvathu nana, Gowri Manohariyai kanden – beautiful SPB, VJ combintion
Nee varuvayena naan – Kalyani Menon from Sujatha

Ippadi sollikkonde pogalam... Smile

Some (almost 15) years back there was a serial spanning some 13 episodes in Doordarshan called Thirayum Isayum… by our MM.
In one of the episodes, Dr.M.Balamuralikrishna told about our MM as M.S.Viswanathan means Music/Sangeetham engira Viswathuku Nathan (Head of the Music World). I still remember that.

Innum more experience and palapala padalgaludan viraivil,
