Like Baroque many others in my generation have not seen many of the old movies. But that does not stop a "Music Fan" to appreciate old songs/movies, even though it is after decades. As long as one has the interest to listen to the oldies and share that enjoyment with others, that needs to be appreciated and welcomed.

As quoted by Irene, "Great talents cannot be hidden!"

That was interesting Surprised

It happens you know.. Many wait for years for a song/movie and the reason could be lack of opportunities to watch a movie during their early days.

As for the song THAZHAYAM POO MUDICHU, Gangai Amaran had said in an interview that this was one of the folk songs that gave much inspitation to him and Ilayaraja (interview- THIRAYUM ISAYUM)

As for the song Naan Pesa Ninaippathellam- this received tremendous praise from Noushad himelf whom I was priviledged to have met in 2001 in Mumbai at a dinner party. It was the background music of this song that had tocuhed the hert of the genius Noushad.

As for the song AADALUDAN PAADALAI KETTU, when MGR was requested by the producers to dance along with L. Vijayalechumy, MGR took that as an insult and got angry. He totally refused. He said how could he perfom a fast dance with an acclaimed dancer. So the movie makers and Director Shankar gave up the idea. On the way home MGR was contemplating. On reaching home, he rang up the producers and agreed to dance with Vijayalechumy- on condition not too many are present during the rehearsals and final shooting. Accordingly all in all, only 13 people were allowed. SURPRISINGLY, MGR did so well and outshone even Vijayalechumy. Even at that advanced age MGR was simply fast in movements. When the movie was screened all eyes fell on MGR and not on the famed dancer Vijayalechumy.

TMS had to sing the most important part of the song- the "Ssss. Aah..Aah.. Aaah." He was trained by a north Indian bangra dance singer. And during the rehearsals the throat of TMS ran dry. It was a tough song for TMS alright, but sure to stir the souls of the listeners.

Well said dear P.Sankar... We need all such information documented in this forum. This will take us closer to the goal with which this website was created: "MSVTimes should be the one-stop point for any information on the Legend, MSV!!!"

And dear Manisekaran, please continue to post such beautiful pieces of info!

I have posted most of them in various threads under the TFMpage forum.
To recapitulate some.

SOME WESTERN WAYS

Although others before him had done much pioneer work, it was MSV who had brought more western tuns and techniques at a time when the fans were steeped in full Tamil music.

Some songs to mention:

1) Enge Nimmathi- Puthiya Paravai-rich orchestration with 70 members playing various instruments.

This was followed by Oru Raja Raniyidam(Sivantha Mann), Ninaithathai Nadathiye-(Nam Naadu) and Azhagiya Thamizh Magal Ival (Rickshawkaran)

2) Yar Antha Nilavu- (Shanthi) Cliff Richard style- TMS first hesitated, but MSV trained himl. Sivaji Ganesan postponed the picturising of this song on 3 occasions to excel. When picture was released, MSV said that Sivaji had even overtaken his composition through acting

3) Panthal Irunthaal- Panda Pasam- This is taken from the background music from the film City Lights of Charlie Chaplin. Just see how MSV has made the Tamil minds unconscioulyenjoy a western number.

4) Muthamo Mohamo- Parakkum Paavai- He avoided instrumentation and filled up with mimicry by Sathan, meesai Murugesan and a few others. Thre was a new group called Chik Munk(?) that was becominmg popular in the western world. It is said he lifted the idea from them.

5) Pon Magal Vanthaal- Sorgam- MSV says he employed full western style for this song

6) Andha Naal Nyabagam- (Uyarntha Manithan) This was a song styled along My Fair Lady (AVM Saravanan says it was styled along Sound of Music) with dialogues in between

7) Kettukkodi urumi MNelam (Pattikkada Pattanama) This is fusion of Tamil folk and western tunes.

Cool Rock and Roll- Pathibakthy- (This was a song that had typical Tamil carnatic tune and full scale western tune coming one after another in pieces. Appropriate instruments were also used)

9) There is a full English song in Anbe Vaa.

10) Andru Vanthathum Ithe Nila (Priya Idathu Penn) -Brought to fore the 14th century western technique called Counterpint in a Chachacha song. (of course Ilayaraja brought out the full scale in the song En Kanmani en Kathali in Chittukkuruvi. Ilayaraja was playing keybord under MSV in the song Malar Ethu in the film Avalukkenru or Manam

Dear Manisekaran,
Great collection..To add some more that comes to my mind now....

1. Muthukulikka Vaareegala - In the end he would have beautifully mixed western drums with the rich folk that would start with the electric guitar and voice support (probably MSV's) ...an unexpected twist to the song and a real treat to the listeners.

2. Oh Little Flower from Neelavanam - with beautiful Piano ,Electric guitar, amazing accordion ,drums and ofcourse flute......

MSV Rules !!!

Hello Manisekaran sir, Glad you visited the forum, added your precious thoughts on the compositions! Hope to see you often here.
I request you to write ( exclusively for MSVTIMES) a thread on Shri.MSV's musical feasts that is extraordinarily special to you. (i know its hard to pick a list of songs, but try it for our pleasure!)

Now from Shri.MSV's musical world!!

DREAMY, FANCY ‘pattu varum…’ - Manly TMS lures melodious Susheela!

Let Shri.MSV whisk you to the world of fantasy in Naan aanaiyittal!

http://www.musicindiaonline.com/p/x/tU3gtmoS2t.As1NMvHdW/
(cut aayerukku third lude Sad )

Indulge in magical, relaxed tune, dreamy orchestration –Shri.MSV’s love for ball room dance sparkles! Couldn’t get enough of the waltzy touch in the melody, attractive rhythmic instrumental fill- ins, vocalist’s expressive sonic gestures, first, third interlude musical feast – Elongated ‘kaadhal yendru oru sirai ….’ Saro mesmerized by MGR leads to the addictive third interlude continues to ‘manamenum oodaiyil…’ charanam ends with the postlude honey soaked humming in kadhal mayakkam by Susheela ties your heart with the dripping romance the lilting tune carries forever! Smiles, Smiles, Smiles!! Smile
Adorable MGR and gorgeous Saroja devi do justice to the fancy composition!
Passionate lyrics!

What an aesthetically pleasing display!! Stupendous orchestration!

This composer show pannaradhu veliyil theriyaama SHOWY- brilliant indeed! Very Happy

One more ball room dance(waltz) musical bonanza, I indulged tonight!!

'indha punnagai...' - Deivathai

Composer swings the rise & fall melody with foot tapping waltz rhythm, ludes enriched with marked wind instrument passages, the tail end of the composition transitions to a folkish side.. smooth!!
Gladly MGR & Saro perform with high spirit!

Good night! Vinatha.

(Praying for rumba, chacha, foxtrot dance melodies, if we are lucky! Very Happy All geners embrace pannaraa elegantly)

A friend of mine lend a MSV tape, I am blessed with ‘neeyo naano...’ in that collection!
Serene, emotive melancholy decorated with effective orchestration that sustains/ reinforces the mood of the composition! Composer shows CLASS, he reminds again & again orchestration not mere decoration, it has vital role to play! Velvety PBS with tuneful Susheela satisfy the Master!
just indulge.....

Two days back tumble down on ‘kaalamagal...’ anandha jothi! What a pathos!!

That lead to a craving for ‘indha natagam...’- Paalum pazhamum!
Poignant shenai passage leads to a virutham ‘paalum pazhamum yena...’ !
Expressive Susheela pours her heart to do justice to the composer’s virtuosity!
Touching tune takes of with lilt, substantial shenai ludes shed tears cry reinforce the mood - What a dramatic finish!!
PERFECT!!
Deivamey..Vinatha!

Ramesh, thanks will follow up the song too!
