|
|
Dear friends,
Many have suggested different items to recall creativity value from MM. My memory tries to recall this particular song from Sumathi en Sundari -" Pottu Vaiththa Mugamo". By every reckoning this song is a masterpiece. Apart from using SPB's voice for Sivaji Ganesan, the creativity about this song is absolutely that of MSV. What I suggest is, there is no lyric for the female artiste. I do not know if the Director wanted such a situation or it was MD's innovation of adding a female element.
Leaving aside the subtle line of difference, a glorious value has been added to the romanticism in the song. MM's choice of Ms B. Vasantha for lending support is quite admirable. The female has to keeping humming in different scales just to add pep to the partner's singing. The singer has done exceptionally well to sustain the tempo. Such duets with one component in lyrical substance and the other providing a humming support [in place of a lyric] THROUGHOUT the song was a deviation from mundane strategies. Probably MSV thought it fit to keep two voices that were new to Sivaji Ganesan and Jayalalitha. There are more such from MM. His contribution is so vast that one has to trvel far down the memory lane to bring out such treasures deeply embedded in the rasikas. I request our friends to analyse these songs and add to such innovations. Even mere listing them would prove a formidable task as the number is bound to be high.
Warm regards Prof.K.Raman Navi Mumbai. _________________ Prof. K. Raman

_________________ Saradha Prakash |

Dear Sharadha,
That was really hilarious and very creative indeed.Keep it Up m'am!!!
Dear Professor Sir,
You have infact kindled my college memories and made me nostalgic when we spoke today morning about this movie.
Me and Ram have spoken about this Movie umpteen times during college... and have experienced eternal joy knowing each other's resonance.
"SUMATHI EN SUNDHARI " is such Musical Grandeur / Extravaganza from our Master starting from the Title Song to the Climax that is shot in the Railway Station when Shivaji and JJ run and hug each other !!!
What a Re-Recording and Title track !!!
The real joy can be experienced when we listen to the re-recording just before the actual prelude of the song which we dont get to hear in the radio and the CD versions.
The song "Pottu Vaitha Mugamo.." starts so romantically as JJ and NT sitting in the park bench and NT reading a romantic novel loudly. When JJ expresses her love and proposes to Shivaji , the re-recording starts which I consider as the real prelude for the song....The women chorus starts "La La La La...Ha Ha Ha Ha....." that is intertwined with an amazing Violin ensemble and flute so beautifully .....Then Sitar starts as a actual prelude to the song.....ISAI DEIVAMEY !!!! What an imagination, creativity !!!
THANKS SIRE...for reminding this movie.....
MSV Rules !!!

"Sumathi En Sundari" is a musical superhit film; a highly commercial successful film too. Directed by C.V.Rajendran. I believe this was the second hit of the Director with Shivaji after "Kalatta Kalyanam". I think this film was produced on behalf of Shivaji films.
This film had some other musical hits like Aalayamaagum mangai manathu (A very beautiful P.Susheela solo) and Kalyaana pandhaliley( P. Susheela ).
SP.B, while talking about this song(Pottu vaitha mugamo) in an interview to DD earlier told that he was very nervous before singing this song because he was really worried how his voice would match for Shivaji and how the audience would accept it. But it seems Shivaji had personally come to the studio on the day of recording and made SPB feel comfortable by asking to sing the song in his style and later while shooting the song he would act accordingly. SPB said he was eager to see this film and when he saw it on the first day he was amazed seeing Shivaji on screen singing this song.
This shows how difficult it was to think of any other singer for Shivaji because TMS was so perfect for the screen image of Shivaji and so matching for the actor's potential. And for the Music Director to think of another singer for such a potential actor and that too to try a budding singer for Shivaji , we should see the guts and creativity of our MSV.

If Sumathi En Sundhari released seperately, the film might have been a very big hit. But it was released when nearly six movies of Shivaji (Iru Dhuruvam, ArunOdhayam, Thangaikkaaga, Kulama Gunama, Prabtham) were in running at the same time. Thatswhy it has met a normal victory.
Apart from these four songs mentioned here, there is one more beautiful song "Yeh puLLai sajjaayi... yEn machchan majjayi" by TMS and LRE, in a function at the farm house. Shivaji, Jayalalitha, Nagesh and Chachu will dance.
In that song, the sangathis of TMS amd LRE will be nice to enjoy.
We already mentioned about the shenai used in 'Aalayamaagum mangai manathu' interlude. Totally the movie is a musical treat.
P.Shankar...
You are right. this movie was produced by Shivaji under the banner of Ramkumar films, next to Kalatta kalyanam. The song "orutharam orey tharam' also recorded for kalatta Kalyanam but picturised in Sumathi en Sundhari. _________________ Saradha Prakash |

MY GOODNESS! Six movies of a Hero running at the same time. Any body of this generation would be shocked hearing this. But that's Shivaji.
