|
|
Dear friends,
Many items have been suggested in support of the theme chosen To me what perpetually stays in memory is that magnificent number "Mullil Roja" from Kalai kovil, a fabulous composition portraying an unhaealthy association between an already married Carnatic musician and a call girl. WHAT IS GREAT ABOUT THIS PIECE IS ITS ROBUST WESTERN ORCHESTRATION. TOTALLY A BRISK PLAY OF INTERLUDES WITH GUITARS, VIOLINS DRUMS AND BHANGOS. BUT, THE SONG PER SE is slow-paced. Much of the pep has been added by LREswari's romatic scintilations of the vocal chord in typical MSV STYLE. But what makes this so very majestic is the male member is in an inebriated state with only some semblance of steadyness under the grip of alcohol. This has been a totally unusual situation for PBS to render his interjects in a voice that fails to clearly pronounce due to intoxication. PBS has done an admirable job by precisely suffering very much like a drunken man. But it is here that I wish to see the giant in MSV. Despite the drunken state , the man being a carnatic music exponent, all his interjects are swaras that fill the gaps and stay as wonderful exposition of musical skills even under unstable voice and mind. I am reminded of another similar situation in a later movie where the hero stoops rather low throwing his long musical tradition to the winds and comes out with a piece that liberally down rates his value as a musician. Look at how MM has aviled of the occasion to bring out a musical melody on western styles with absolutely delightful carnatic swara infusions. Marvellous- would be an understatement any way.

Dear Prof. Raman,
That was a brilliant gem. Mullil Roja to me is "Absolute Melody Unlimited". When we all called on MSV after Ram's wedding (MSV hosted a dinner for Ram & Mrs. Ram) at his residence, we played this song. MSV thoroughly enjoyed the song and so did we. It was a memorable day for all of us to be sitting and eating with him AND LISTEN TO SOME OF THE IMMORTALS CREATED BY HIM. GREAT EVENING INDEED!!!
Ram could you recall this evening for the benefit of all us please?
CHEERS
MSV IS MUSIC
