Dear Mr.Raghavender,
I thought I had a good collection of MSV's songs. Now I know how wrong I was.
What I have is only a fraction of his monumental work. Thank you for reminding us of many golden nuggets. My Mac does not let me listen to the songs linked to jointscene, unfortunately. But the other links seem to work ok. MAALAI PONNANA MAALAI is fantastic. Simplicity is the best form of sophistication!
Thanks a million.
Regards. _________________ Dr.Damodaran Pachaiappan |

I came across an observation in a forum that many good songs of other MDs in the 80's have been overshadowed by IR's popular songs. True. Shadows can cover real objects for some time, as long as the light is falling on the subjects of the shadows. Once the light moves away, the shadows disappear and the real objects reveal themselves, especially if they are sparkling. (It is another matter that the subjects of the shadows may also, in turn, be covered by other shadows!)
Eclipses are ephemeral. But the moon is eternal, like MM 's songs.(I prefer the analogy of the moon, rather than the sun because, the moon is ever pleasant and cool and any action in the moonlight becomes nostalgic in prospect)
Mr.Raghavendran has been doing an excellent service by bringing MSV's songs of 80's into the limelight. I listened to quite a few songs from Mupperum Deviyar, Manakkanakku etc., for the first time.
Like the legendary squirrel of the Ramayana contributing to the construction of Sethu, I am also adding a song to this list.
I heard this song for the first time, a few weeks before, in Endrum MSV. I was astounded by its beauty. Yet, it is a 'kuththu' song, not of a very respectable genre! I have also mentioned this song in my posting on this episode of Endrum MSV. Since then, I have been listening to this song almost everyday and the excitement has not abated a bit.
It is 'kadavul padachchaan' from Pokkiri Raaja, written by Kannadasan and sung by SPB. If 'vidiya vidiya,' a very soft mellifluous number is for the 'Raja', this rambunctious number is for the 'Pokkiri!'
MSV himself was enjoying this song with an expression of wonderment (when it was played in Endrum MSV), apparently because of the unrestrained rendering of this stunning number by Ananthu, almost matching the inimitable rendering of SPB and also because MSV had forgotten composing this song (as revealed by him after listening to the song). I was reminded of a very succinct observation made by our professor in one of postings,"Memory can be an aid to routine work; but it is a hindrance to creativity." No wonder MM doesn't bother to remember all that he has created and just keeps creating more and more with an inalienable passion!
For most of the other MDs (Vidhya Sagar could be an exception), kuththu song means excessive use of percussion instruments and high decibel cacophony of assorted sounds, both vocal and instrumental. But for MSV, kuththup paattu should also be melodious and ever enjoyable, not something that creates some vibrations for a few days and then retires to where it should belong - the oblivion.
This song has Kannadasan's oft-quoted popular punch line:
மீன் செத்தா கருவாடு
நீ செத்தா வெறும் கூடு!
This has been quoted in the song, 'vanthenda paalkaaran' from Annnaamalai as:
மீன் செத்தா கருவாடு
நீ செத்தா வெறும் கூடு
கண்ணதாசன் சொன்னதுங்க
Here is the link for what I consider to be the best of all kuththu songs:

Dear Sri Rengaswami,
Thank you for your kind compliments. There are miles to go before a sleep. And I am a very small atomic bit in the midst of stalwarts like Profeessor and like.
And coming to kuthu type of songs, the first one to bring a major breakthrough was Adi Ennadi Rakkamma in 1972. It broke all previous records of sales of records. And now and then MM has been giving such numbers. Thanjavuru melam from Simla Special, En Rajathi varungadi from Thirisulam, belong to that genre among such other similar numbers. But none of them irritated you and that is the class of MM.
